Day 1 –

 

  • Intro, expectations, paperwork, course outline.
  • Learning styles exercise
  • ACA courses, insurance and paperwork
  • Effective coach characteristics; barriers to learning.
  • Giving feedback

12 – 12:45            Lunch  candidate presentations

12:45 – 1:15        Presentations: orientation of clients to basics before getting on water

  • Rotate 3-5 minute presentations among all candidates
  • Safety issues: environmental hazards; proper clothing; water, sunscreen, etc
  • PFDs
  • Kayak nomenclature and boat fit
  • Paddle parts, length, grip, etc
  • Paddlers’ box and torso rotation
  • Wet exit – land demo/practice
  • Launching/landing – getting in and out of the boat

1:15 – 2:45           IT Presentation of strokes and student practice

  • Sweep, pivot, draw, stern rudder, forward, reverse, stopping, low brace , Stern rudder double shift , Side Slip , Bow Ruddr

2:45 – 3:15           Break + Candidate presentation (1)

3:15 – 4:15           Critical eye and feedback practice   (Intro and practice FIG 8)

  • Instructor demos and group id’s strengths weaknesses
  • Two small groups: candidates demo and others ID strengths/weaknesses

4:15 – 4:30           Review of SSEDO components and homework assignment

  • IT goes over SSEDO using one stroke as example
  • Assign each candidate one stroke to teach next morning – Homework task is to figure out how you are going to run the unit

 

 

Day 2 –

8:30- 11:15          1st Go Round on Candidates teaching strokes

  • 6 strokes (include low brace)

 

11:15 -12              Candidate presentations (15 minutes each with feedback)

12 – 12:30            Lunch

12:30 – 2:30        Rescues – IT demo and candidate practice

  • T – rescues and variations (i.e., leg over) – 1 hr
  • Paddle float- ½ hr
  • Scramble – ½ hr

2:30 – 3                 Break + 1 Candidate presentation

3 – 4                       Rescues

  • Scoop + Hand of God – ½ hr each

4 – 4:30                 Critical Eye          (  DISCUSS LIABILITY)

  • IT demos T rescue and paddle float (with flaws)
  • Group ID’s strengths/weaknesses of the rescues

4:30 – 4:45           Homework assignments

  • Each candidate gets 1 stroke and one rescue – think about how you will handle it next morning

5 – 6                       L-1 debriefs

 

Day 3 –

9 – 12:30              2nd Go Round on candidates teaching strokes + teaching rescues

  • All  candidates teach one stroke – 2 hours
  • All teach one rescue (some may have same rescue) – 1 ½ hrs

12:30 – 1:15        Lunch  presentations

1:15 – 2:15           Navigation (on beach)

  • Charts
  • Compass
  • Taking bearings

2:15 – 3                 Edging – introduce + paddle circle forward and back + figure 8 forward and back

3 – 4:30                 Video basic strokes – practice while waiting

Debrief
